Hyungjoo Kim was a special guest during a classical performance for the Korean War Cease-Fire 60th Anniversary at the Skokie Performing Center in 2013. She was one of the invited artists. Ms. Kim fabricated a paper dress made out of Hanji, Korean traditional paper. This dress was the major focus of this celebratory project.
Choreography for a children's performance was an added element created by Youjin Jung which emphasized contemporary art through traditional paper dresses. Lotus flower sculptures in white were also prominent as a representation of the appreciation of the warriors' sacrifice and the purity of beauty. In buddhism, the lotus flower represents the strong visual appearance in an unclean pond while the lotus flowers bloom as a symbol of a savior among a world of hardships. For Hyungjoo Kim, this sacrifice is the foundation of Korean evolution to the present times of modernity.
In summary, the symbolism of the lotus flowers and the memorial musical performance are intimately interconnected during this special event.
